Beauty and the pleasure of creativity are always at the cultural heart of Cyprus, the mythic birthplace of Aphrodite – at Petra tou Romiou – a 50 kilometre drive from Londa, along the Limassol shoreline to Paphos.
Her ancient powers endureth still! The 3rd Maserati Blu Diamond Fashion Day, organised by Blurred magazine, is to be held at the Limassol Marina on Sunday 17th November. Over the same weekend (Sat 16 | Sun 17 | 11am-7pm), Londa plays host to her latest community event – “Wintery Crafts” – a wonderful opportunity to purchase beautiful, uniquely handcrafted gifts created by local artists and craftsmen – organised by AllHandHomeMade.
A fabulous gemstone jewellery exhibition will also be taking place in Limassol and even Aphrodite herself is the subject of a dance to be performed at the Limassol Rialto a week later.
Each handmade object is sure to tell its own individual story
Throughout the year, Limassol constantly plays host to a packed local and international cultural programme of art, craft, music, dance, theatre, film, literature, poetry and much more. Londa regularly offers hotel guests and visitors a select number of boutique style, authentic community events, including, exclusive Wine Tasting Dinners (sampling locally produced fine wines) in the Caprice Restaurant, Mum2Be and Baby Days, and a series of Sunday Night Jazz concerts featuring an eclectic mix of musicians from Cyprus, Greece, Russia and around the world.
With the festive season fast approaching, the culturally curious visitor to Cyprus will no doubt be keen to seek out and purchase examples of local art and craft skills to be given as presents and gifts. Each handmade object is sure to tell its own individual story, and something too, of the collective Cypriot cultural imagination from whence it was lovingly fashioned. You may indeed, sense the aesthetic spirit of the goddess deity in attendance alongside the 500 plus visitors who have expressed an interest to be there on the day.
Nine individual ‘high end’ fashion shows
The presence of Venus (Roman Aphrodite) will definitely be hovering among the 5,000 guest capacity expected at the Maserati Blu Diamond Fashion Day, with many from the Russian, Lebanese and Armenian communities. Of the 3,000 plus who attended last season’s show, three quarters were women plus VIP guests drawn from the worlds of media, politics and business.
Hailed as one of the biggest and prestigious fashion events on the island, the Maserati Blu show will present new Autumn-Winter 2019/20 season collections from local and international designers, and boutiques. Every 60 – 90 minutes a new designer or designer/ boutique collaboration will be presented. A total of nine individual ‘high end’ fashion shows with 400 sittings per each show, alongside more than 50 exhibitions will be staged including, fashion photography, fashion design, bridal, make-up, and much more to intrigue a visiting fashionista.
Masterpiece jewellery and an appearance from Aphrodite herself
More fabulous fashion adornment for those seeking small, unique and boutique, may also be found at the Craftic-O Jewellery Exhibition taking place at the Beat Bazaar, Chatziloizi Michailidi Street, Katholiki on Sat 16 – Sun 17 (11am – 9pm). Craftic-O are a jewellery making studio where local crafts men and women are dedicated to evolving techniques for creating masterpiece jewellery.
An appearance from goddess Aphrodite herself could also prove to be a real gem at the Limassol Rialto one week later. Sixty years of diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Cuba will be celebrated in ‘Reflecting Aphrodite’, a ‘multi-faceted’ dance performance presented by the Embassy of Cyprus in Havana and the Embassy of Cuba in Cyprus on Sun 24 Nov ( 8.30 – 10.00pm). Tales and myths of the Cyprus born goddess are revealed which aim to show parallels and similar characteristics to the deities of Cuban-African cultures.
Another opportunity for discovery
As November turns into December, a unique Christmas Arts and Crafts exhibition will take place at Limassol Old Port Square Exhibition Hall (Sat 30 Nov – Sun 1 Dec, from 12.00). It’s another opportunity for discovery, enabling visitors to Cyprus to browse amongst local exhibitors showcasing beautiful crafted items, including jewellery, bags and children’s costumes – all handmade – plus many items of clothing, origami jewellery sealed with varnish, cosmetics, and a huge variety of decorative items.
