Singing at the Londa on Saturday 24 January is the effervescent Jazz vocalist Evilena Protektor performing with Londa regulars, the Leonid Nesterov Trio.
A winning voice
Evilena has just returned from winning her first Grand Prix at one of the few competitions for jazz vocals left in Europe – the Jazz Voices! Competing in Lithuania, she sang through a series of rounds to get to the final, ultimately to win by singing stunning renditions of favourite melodies.
But this is not Evilena’s first competition or victory as this acclaimed Baltic States Jazz vocalist has also made 3rd place in Riga Jazz Stage, and runner-up in the International Jazz vocalist contest “Nomme Jazz” (Estonia). And with her band, “Pieneņu Vīns”, Evilena has been a vocalist since 2005 and has gained the “Latvian Music Annual Award 2011” nomination, “Eirodziesma 2011” – 3rd place in superfinal, “MicRec Open4” – Best Band, “Tu Esi Pamanīts 2008” – Best Band & Best Vocal.
Coming to Londa
Now we are honoured that she will present as headliner at the first concert in our 2015 Jazz series. She will sing tracks that she has successfully performed on her “Jazz in Latvia” compilation album, and at festivals such as “Pori Jazz” (Finland), “Limassol Jazz” (Cyprus), “Live in Blue Bay” (Ukraine).
The Caprice restaurant is the venue and 5pm is the time to hear Evilena run her truly amazingly versatile voice through the Jazz scales, not unlike her famous predecessors Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, though with the clarity of a modern repertoire.
With her are the Leonid Nesterov Trio on keys, double bass and drums keeping rhythm with Evilena. One of the firm favourites on the Cyprus Jazz scene, Leonid Nesterov brings his band back to the Londa stage once again for the ever popular Londa Jazz Series. And with every packed concert they did with us last year, playing with some of the best performers in contemporary Jazz, this trio have now become our Londa celebrities and we are proud to have them return.
